Spring Break and beaches are practically synonymous. With a peak season in March (spanning from late February to mid-April), traditionally Spring Break is a popular time for students to flock to tropical destinations and enjoy a week off from school or university. For those who aren’t fans of sand or oceans, the following events offer alternative ways to enjoy the upcoming time off and welcome the beginning of the warmer season. Plan ahead with one of these alternative Spring Break activities.
The Bachelor Live on Stage
ABC’s hit dating reality television franchise The Bachelor has captivated millions of fans. Last year ABC announced that the show would be hitting the road in 2020 with The Bachelor Live on Stage Official Tour, touting the tagline, “Come to enjoy the show or come to fall in love.” Featuring Bachelor alum Ben Higgins as the host and surprise guest appearances by local Bachelor and Bachelorette alumni, the tour is essentially a fan party, promising all the drama, gossip and romance that is the show’s signature.
On each episode of the show, the bachelor interacts with the women on group and solo dates and presents a rose to each one he wishes to remain in the house during elaborate rose ceremonies. The Bachelor Live on Stage enables fans to watch this onscreen experience unfold onstage and to participate in the rose ceremony for the first time ever. One eligible Bachelor in each city is introduced to local ladies from the audience and, through a series of games, challenges, onstage dates and other fun “getting to know you” scenarios, he chooses the lady he’s most compatible with. Audience members can get involved with the selection process by asking questions, making suggestions, and cheering on their favorite participants.
Local Bachelors are chosen closer to the show date in each city, and applicants for onstage Bachelorettes are either notified by casting directors or potentially pulled right from their seat during the show! This March The Bachelor Live on Stage stage-show is traveling to Portland, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and more.
Rascal Flatts Farewell Tour
With Rascal Flatts announcing their farewell Life Is a Highway tour this year, fans of the band have a few final opportunities to see them perform live together. The announcement to go on one more tour marks the country group’s 20th anniversary. The band revealed that they felt that the time was right to part ways and they are doing so amicably.
The country trio is leaving behind an incredible, two-decade long music legacy. Formed in Columbus, Ohio in 1999, the band is composed of lead vocalist Gary Levox, Jay DeMarcus on bass guitar, and Joe Don Rooney on guitar and banjo. Since their debut they have become the most awarded country group of the past decade and one of country music's highest-grossing touring acts. Their studio albums, seven of which were certified platinum or higher, have produced a string of hits and number-one singles - perhaps none more recognizable than “Life is a Highway,” which they covered for the Cars soundtrack.
The trio is planning to release new music as part of a year-long goodbye. Before Rascal Flatts embarks on their farewell tour, fans can catch them in New Jersey and Connecticut for two nights in March.
March Madness
Officially known as the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, March Madness welcomes the thump of basketballs, the squeak of sneakers on the court, and the roar of passionate crowds each year. The first NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament was in 1939 and has been held ever since.
The concept of March Madness was born in Illinois. An annual high school boys basketball tournament grew from a small invitational affair in 1908 to a statewide institution with over 900 schools competing by the late 1930s. Sellout crowds regularly packed out the University of Illinois' Huff Gymnasium for a field of teams known as the “Sweet Sixteen.” Illinois high school official Henry V. Porter was the first to coin the phrase “March Madness,” but it didn’t stick until CBS broadcaster Brent Musburger used it during coverage of the 1982 tournament.
The 2020 NCAA Tournament kicks off with Selection Sunday on March 15. The First Four plays in Dayton, Ohio and subsequent games will be held in Tampa, Los Angeles, Houston, New York, and more. It all culminates with the championship in Atlanta, Georgia from April 4-6 - the first time the Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host the NCAA Final Four.
Adam Sandler 100% Fresher Tour
Since getting a start on stage in the late 1980s, Adam Sandler has become one of the world’s most famous comedians. From his sketch comedy gigs on Saturday Night Live to his musical recordings, Sandler has built a legacy with hilarious, iconic characters like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. For the last decade or so the comedian has also ventured into dramatic territory that has earned him critical acclaim, most recently with the crime thriller Uncut Gems.
In 2018, Sandler released his Netflix documentary 100% Fresh, his first stand-up special in 20 years, and an accompanying audio CD with the same name. Both were a hit and marked a revival in his career, inspiring the 100% Fresher Tour where the actor returned to his roots and brought his bizarre and endearing humor to live stand-up shows across the country. He recently posted his decision on Facebook to extend the 2019 run with nine dates in March 2020. The tour kicks off in Estero, Florida and concludes in Thackerville, Oklahoma.
The Book of Mormon
Winner of nine Tony Awards, including the 2011 Best Musical award, The Book of Mormon is a hilarious and irreverent musical written by the creators of South Park. The play is a satirical examination of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' beliefs and practices. It has grossed over $500 million, making it one of the most successful musicals of all time, and as of July 27, 2019, it is the 14th longest-running Broadway show.
The show opened on Broadway in March 2011, after nearly seven years of development, receiving overwhelmingly positive critical responses, and setting records in ticket sales for the Eugene O'Neill Theatre. In 2013, the musical premiered in the West End, followed by two U.S. national tours. A production in Melbourne and the first non-English version in Stockholm both opened in January 2017. Productions in Oslo and Copenhagen followed. Another U.S. national tour in 2020 gives fans a chance to experience the play nearly every night in March.
